World of Warcraft Trading Card Game art
- For general info on the TCG, see World of Warcraft Trading Card Game.
A lot of Hearthstone's card art is reused art from the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game (WoW TCG). This is especially true when looking at the earlier card sets in Hearthstone's history, particularly sets before Whispers of the Old Gods, where Hearthstone's team wasn't as large as it is nowadays.
Legacy, Curse of Naxxramas, Goblins vs Gnomes, Blackrock Mountain, The Grand Tournament, and The League of Explorers, the first six card sets, are also the ones that use the most TCG art relative to the sets' respective sizes. The League of Explorers marks the last set where a large portion of the set reused TCG art. Ever since then, due to the unique themes of new expansions like Whispers of the Old Gods, Mean Streets of Gadgetzan, and Journey to Un'Goro, new art had to be commissioned, since the TCG didn't have art pieces to fit the art style of these expansions.
Ever since Ashes of Outland, every collectible card in every new expansion and mini-set has featured original commissioned art by a variety of artists. This also partly holds true for every expansion and adventure since Whispers of the Old Gods, where sets have reused card art from the TCG for only one or two cards per set (with notable exceptions being Knights of the Frozen Throne, The Witchwood, and Death Knight release sets, see below).
Nowadays, new cards reusing art from the TCG can only be found in Battlegrounds, Duels, Mercenaries, and Solo Adventures.
Below is a list of cards using TCG art, divided by card sets.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Every collectible and uncollectible card from Scholomance Academy to Murder at Castle Nathria used new original art. The streak stopped on December 6, 2022, when March of the Lich King, Path of Arthas and Core all featured new TCG art coupled with the release of the death knight class.
- Almost all card art in Legacy is reused from the TCG.
- There are some cards, e.g. Old Murk-Eye, Ironforge Rifleman, Mana Wyrm, and Doomhammer, that use art from different promotional material like wallpapers, individual artworks, trailers, and novel covers.[1]
- Since the TCG doesn't have a Pandaria expansion, all Pandaren artwork in the Legacy set is from different wallpapers or concept art for Mists of Pandaria.[1]
- Goblins vs Gnomes was the first set to use a significant amount of original art in addition to TCG art. Almost every Mech in the expansion gets original art.
- Both Curse of Naxxramas and Blackrock Mountain use a lot of art from their respective raid decks from the TCG.[1]
- The Grand Tournament and The League of Explorers are the last expansion and adventure to use a significant amount of TCG art.
- One Night in Karazhan was the first set to use no TCG art at all.
- Knights of the Frozen Throne surprisingly uses a decent amount of TCG art, considering the sets before it started to shift to using original art instead.
- Developers feel they've already used most quality pieces from the TCG, and prefer to make new art that fits their current standards and style.[2]
- However, there is still a plan to use TCG art occasionally, as was stated in 2022.[2]
- The referenced "several" pieces here likely referred to the new cards using TCG art released alongside the death knight class on December 6, 2022.
