Perils in Paradise
Perils in Paradise is Hearthstone's 27th expansion, featuring 145 new collectible cards released on July 23, 2024.[1] That old scamp Marin has put his questing days behind him and is setting off on a new adventure: resort management! Tucked away in the beautiful Spiral Isles, The Marin is Azeroth's newest vacation getaway, and it has everything: exciting entertainment, tourist traps, and even some of Marin's old pirate buddies.
Perils in Paradise introduces a new keyword: Tourist. Cards with Tourist allow the player to put Perils in Paradise cards from a specific class into their deck during deck-building. For example, a paladin card that has the keyword "Rogue Tourist" allows the Paladin to put Rogue cards into their deck.

New Keyword: Tourist[edit | edit source]
- The Marin is Azeroth’s hottest new Tourist attraction! Each class gets one Legendary Tourist card that lets them vacation to another class during deckbuilding. Put your Tourist into your deck and their destination class’s Perils in Paradise cards get instantly added to the deckbuilding interface, letting you put them into your deck like your main class cards—except for the destination class’s Tourist card; just one vacation at a time.

- "Marin the Fox has retired from his life of swashbuckling. His dream has always been to open a resort on a tropical island and staff it with all of his pirate friends."[2]

History[edit | edit source]
Development[edit | edit source]
Game director Tyler Bielman talks about the development of Perils in Paradise:[3]
- Hearthstone's expansions are typically led by a specific team member who chooses a theme. For Perils in Paradise, Bielman revealed to esports.gg that the initial theme used to be all about pirates. However, this later evolved into the broader concept of Hearthstone on holiday. Now, the expansion features beloved Warcraft characters on vacation. Pirates are still included, of course. The expansion lead is Sage Georgiou.
- "It kind of started as a pirates theme," Bielman said. "Sort of a swashbuckling pirates kind of vibe. And then gradually, it kind of morphed into something that's a little bit broader than that. When the team came up with the idea of Hearthstone — but on holiday — you can sort of imagine it. You can sort of close your eyes and you can see it and you can feel what it would be like to take the iconic Warcraft characters on vacation."
[edit | edit source]
On June 16, 2024, the official Hearthstone Twitter posted a teaser image with the quote "Your flight departs tomorrow at 10AM PT."[4]
On June 17, the expansion was announced and new cards were revealed.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Perils in Paradise is the first expansion to receive no cinematic trailer. Developers cite that the reasoning for this is the poor reception that the Whizbang's Workshop cinematic trailer received, and instead opted for the "Flight safety" video featuring community members.[5]
- Perils in Paradise is also the first expansion to not contain a new battlefield.
- Sage Georgiou is the set lead for Perils in Paradise.[3]
