With the arrival of the Year of the Gryphon, Galakrond's Awakening is now a Wild format card set, which means cards from the Galakrond's Awakening will no longer be playable in Standard format matches. For more information, see Game format.

Galakrond's Awakening is the fifth adventure, added with the Descent of Dragons expansion. Featuring 35 new collectible cards, the adventure was released on January 21, 2020.[1]

Unlike The Dalaran Heist and Tombs of Terror, Galakrond's Awakening returns to the classic linear adventure format, featuring 24 bosses across 4 chapters, as well as a challenging Heroic mode. Each chapter contains two campaigns, one for both League of E.V.I.L. and League of Explorers.

Chapter 1 of E.V.I.L. campaign is available to all players for free, with Chapter 1 of Explorers campaign and other chapters are purchasable with Runestones.

Structure[edit | edit source]

For general information on adventures, see Adventure.

  • Galakrond's Awakening comprises 4 chapters, with 24 boss encounters in total.
    • The adventure is split into two different campaigns, one for the League of E.V.I.L. and one for the League of Explorers. Each chapter contains 6 boss encounters, 3 for each campaign.
    • Purchasing an individual chapter unlocks that chapter for both campaigns.
  • Defeating each encounter for the first time will award 2 copies each of one or two new cards, which may be neutral or class-specific. If the new card has legendary rarity, it will award 1 copy instead.
  • The adventure has both Story and Heroic modes, with the latter featuring "immensely difficult" versions of the same bosses.
    • In Story mode, the player is given pre-made deck for each boss encounter, controls a special hero with their corresponding Hero Power, and gets special interactions between their hero and boss.
    • In Heroic mode, the player needs to use their own deck. Defeating all Heroic bosses will award two special card backs. (see below)

The below tables summarize the structure of the adventure, with bosses matched with their corresponding rewards. The "Dust value" column shows the amount of Arcane Dust the cards in each chapter will produce if disenchanted.

How to get[edit | edit source]

  • Each chapter of the adventure must be purchased before it can be played. Chapter 1 of E.V.I.L. campaign is free for all players.
  • Players must have unlocked all 10 classes in order to access the adventure.
  • Can only be bought from the in-game shop using Runestones.

Pricing[edit | edit source]

Pre-purchase bundle

Players can purchase wings using Gold or Runestones. "Bundle" discounts are offered if purchasing all remaining locked wings at one time using Runestones.

Note while players can purchase a variable number of chapters, all options above a single chapter involve buying all remaining chapters.

  • For example, it is not possible to use Runestones to purchase the first 3 chapters, and then buy the final chapter later; in order to buy multiple chapters using Runestones, the player must buy all remaining chapters. It is however possible to buy individual chapters, and later buy all remaining chapters at once.

Each indiviual chapter can be purchased with 700 Gold or Runestones, unlocking for both two campaigns. Chapter 1 is, however, the only exception, as the E.V.I.L. campaign of Chapter 1 is free; 700 Gold or Runestones must be spent to unlock the Explorers campaign of Chapter 1.

Cards[edit | edit source]

The adventure features 35 new collectible cards. Galakrond's Awakening cards can be recognized with a special watermark (depicting the Descent of Dragons watermark emerging from a card) behind the card text, not found on other cards.

Regular versions of the cards can be obtained through beating bosses and completing chapters. Once the regular version of a card has been obtained, both regular and golden versions can be crafted and disenchanted for the usual amounts.

As each chapter is released, if Galakrond's Awakening is included during an Arena rotation, all cards from that chapter are made available for selection in the Arena, regardless of whether the player has purchased or completed the corresponding chapter.

Boss cards and Hero Powers[edit | edit source]

Main article: Galakrond's Awakening boss cards

In addition to the playable cards listed above, Galakrond's Awakening brings more than 300 unique cards, Playable Heroes, Hero Powers and many more available only during the adventure's boss encounters.

Card backs[edit | edit source]

There are two card backs related to the adventure which can be obtained by defeating all bosses in Heroic mode.

Trailer[edit | edit source]

Themes[edit | edit source]

Galakrond's Awakening is considered a special mini-set that celebrates and sums up all flavors, keywords and mechanics introduced during the whole year, as it was the fourth and final set to release during the Year of the Dragon. Therefore, the adventure brings back the Twinspell and Reborn keyword, and introduces more cards that support Quests and Lackeys.

Twinspell throwback[edit | edit source]

In the Rise of Shadows expansion, the Hearthstone team had introduced a new keyword for the good side, Twinspell.

Reborn throwback[edit | edit source]

In the Saviors of Uldum expansion, the keyword Reborn made its debut.

Quest-supporting cards[edit | edit source]

In the Saviors of Uldum expansion, the Hearthstone team had brought back Legendary Quests, which was originally introduced in the Journey to Un'Goro expansion and rewards Hero Powers instead of cards when the player completes its objective.

The only card which supports the Quest archetype was  Questing Explorer. In this adventure, more cards are introduced to help supporting this archetype.

Lackey-generating cards[edit | edit source]

During the Year of the Dragon overall, the E.V.I.L. side has Lackey and gets introduced a lot of Lackey-generating cards which give E.V.I.L. classes the ability to play these 1-cost powerful minions.
