Control Mage (Also referred to as Burn Mage, Discover Mage, or Yogg Mage) is a control Mage deck type. Control Mage utilizes a mix of high amounts of card generation to maintain their resources on the mid and late-game, as well as big finishers in the late game using either burst damage or big minions, often using cost-reduction effects to play out their biggest threats in quick succession.
Control Mage is the successor to Freeze Mage, formed after the launch of Journey to Un'Goro thanks to the inclusion of powerful cards such as Arcanologist and Primordial Glyph. Control Mage has a flexible game plan, being capable of starting with an aggressive, Tempo Mage-style opening with Mana Wyrm or Medivh's Valet and focus on finishing the opponent with burst. Alternatively, it could play a more value-focused game with N'Zoth, the Corruptor, Medivh, the Guardian or Frost Lich Jaina. It can also be played similar to Freeze Mage, incorporating Alexstrasza or Archmage Antonidas into the burn plan to finish the game, or even Arcane Giants and Yogg-Saron, Hope's End.
With the release of Kobolds and Catacombs, most Control Mage shifted towards Big Spell Mage, using synergy effects with high-cost spells and grinding out victories over very long value games. A generalist type of Control Mage saw a return when Luna's Pocket Galaxy was buffed from 7 to 5 mana, which has great synergy with Conjurer's Calling to create huge boards for low mana.
