Notes

  • Kil'jaeden functions as follows:[1]
    • When Kil'jaeden is played, the player's deck is removed (not destroyed, so destroy-related effects like  Furnace Fuel don't trigger).
    • Then, the player's deck is replaced with a green portal.
    • Any time the player draws a card from any action (start of turn, manual draw, etc), they draw a random demon from the portal.
      • The demons can be from any class or neutral.
    • At the end of the player's turns, all future demons drawn from the portal get an additional +2/+2.
      • Any that are already drawn or played don't receive that buff.
    • As the portal is endless, the player cannot receive fatigue for the rest of the game.
    • Shuffling cards into the portal or removing cards from it will have no effect at all. The player can only draw random demons from it.
    • Swapping decks is the only way to get rid of the portal, such as through  King Togwaggle. In that case, the opponent will get the portal and the player will get the opponent's normal deck.
    • Cards like  Tracking or  Fracking will work with the portal. In the case of Tracking, the player will see 3 random demons and draw one of them.
    • Playing another Kil'jaeden will not replace the portal or the buffs that have already been granted to demons in it.[2]
    • The portal cannot generate another Kil'jaeden.[3]
    • Functionally, the portal is a self-refilling deck of 30 random demons. Any time that it isn't 30 random demons, it will try to "fix" itself to be 30 random demons.[4]
      • As such, if the player draws a card and the deck goes down to 29, a new demon will be shuffled into the deck.
      • Mechanics like Dredge and  Lorekeeper Polkelt will work, but only once. If the player Dredges, they can move one demon to the top, but once it's drawn, the whole deck gets reshuffled. The same functionality happens with Polkelt.
      • Because the deck size is always 30, cards like  Fanottem, Lord of the Opera and  Chef Nomi will function accordingly, in this case staying as a 30-Cost card and not summoning the elementals respectively.
      • For cards like  Myra's Unstable Element, the player will draw all of the 30 demons currently in the portal, and then it will refill itself back to 30.
      • Certain deck-related criteria may be able to be triggered if the player gets lucky with their 30 random demons.
        • Example:  Lightforged Zealot's "If your deck has no Neutral cards" can trigger if all 30 demons happen to be class cards.
        • Example:  Caricature Artist can draw a card if a demon that costs 5 or more happens to be within those 30 demons.
        • Example:  Zephrys the Great can trigger if all 30 demons happen to be unique.

Lore

Kil'jaeden (sometimes spelled as Kil'Jaeden), was a powerful man'ari eredar demon lord and the second in rank of the Burning Legion. 13,000 years ago, Kil'jaeden,  Archimonde and Velen were the leaders of the benevolent eredar people of Argus. When the Dark Titan Sargeras arrived and offered them the answer to the most important question there was, "what is the one true underlying flaw of the universe?", the eredar, as a knowledge-seeking race, accepted, led by Kil'jaeden and Archimonde. Sargeras blessed them with unimaginable power, turning the eredar into demons who would help Sargeras get rid of that flaw, while Velen and his followers fled, renaming themselves the draenei.
While Archimonde led the demonic armies, Kil'jaeden was charged with assimilating as many races as possible into the folds of the Legion. He long sought to exact revenge on Velen and his followers for their perceived betrayal, which eventually led him to corrupt the orcs, native inhabitants of the world of Draenor which the draenei had settled upon. The orcs formed the Orcish Horde, slaughtered the draenei, and invaded the world of Azeroth, marking the beginning of the First War. Kil'jaeden also created the Lich King and the undead Scourge as a means to weaken Azeroth's defenses in preparation for a future Legion invasion. Since Sargeras was nowhere to be seen following the death of  Medivh, Kil'jaeden had assumed the role of acting leader of the Burning Legion.
Kil'jaeden is one of the two main antagonists in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (alongside  Illidan Stormrage), the main antagonist in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, and the secondary antagonist in Legion.
