Notes

To edit these notes, go to Template:Tess Greymane notes.

  • Any minions summoned by Tess Greymane will not trigger their Battlecry effects.[1]
  • Cards played by Tess will not add durability to a currently equipped  Spectral Cutlass.[2]
  • If the rogue player played a non-rogue hero card and thus became a different class prior to playing Tess, Tess will count the player as that class and replay all rogue cards played thus far.[3]
    • Playing rogue class hero cards will reset the player to being a rogue.
  • Tess will play cards in a random order, regardless of the order they were originally played in.[4]
  • As of patch 14.0, Tess will not play multi-class cards, such as  Lotus Agents, if the player's current class is one of the classes of the multi-class card (not included in patch notes).
  • As of patch 11.2, Tess's battlecry is limited to 30 cards and will stop if she is silenced, killed, transformed, or leaves the battlefield.[5]
  • Quickly after patch 11.2, this change was reversed, Tess now once more continues her battlecry even after she is silenced, killed, transformed, or leaves the battlefield.[6]
  • As of patch 11.2, Tess will replay hero cards with her battlecry.
  • If Tess switches ownership to the opponent via  Treachery or  Psychic Scream, she will continue to activate the Battlecry, but for the opponent's side.

Lore

In World of Warcraft

Warcraft Wiki icon.pngThis section uses content from the Warcraft Wiki.
Tess Greymane is the Queen of Gilneas, and a member of the Greymane clan as the daughter of King Genn and Queen Mia. Once the princess of the kingdom, Tess became the rightful heir to the throne after her brother, Prince Liam, was murdered by  Sylvanas Windrunner during the Battle for Gilneas City. In the course of the invasion of Gilneas, she and her people were exiled to the Howling Oak in Darnassus with the help of the night elves, until she moved with the royal family to Stormwind City. With her brother gone, she was searching for answers to questions she never thought she would ask.
By the time of the third invasion of the Burning Legion, Tess fought the demons as a member of the Uncrowned and joined the Council of Shadows, the leaders of the secret rogue organization. During the Fourth War, she and Lorna Crowley headed to Darkshore on behalf of King Genn, where they led the Gilnean forces to help the Army of the Black Moon in reclaiming their land during the Battle for Darkshore.
Over a decade after their exile, King Genn declared that the time had come to reclaim their kingdom and gave command of the operation to Tess. At the head of the Gilnean troops and their allies of the 7th Legion, she also appealed for support from the Desolate Council, the Forsaken being experts in fighting the Scarlet Crusade. Following the Reclamation of Gilneas and its capital, King Genn reaffirmed his faith in Tess and abdicated as the ruling king of Gilneas, declaring that his daughter would henceforth reign as the new queen of Gilneas, ready to lead their people towards a better future.

In Hearthstone

Princess Tess Greymane is heir to the throne of Gilneas, and by all accounts a woman of extraordinary skill and razor wit. Tess combines her father's iron will with a subtlety and deftness he's always lacked. She's well renowned for cleverly using her enemies' best tricks against them, and she'd make a powerful Queen—though she seems to have little interest in matters of state. In fact, she spends an unusual amount of time around low-born thieves, rogues, and rapscallions.
Lately her behavior has been most concerning. The Princess has been seen haunting—figuratively, as she's not dead . . . yet—the lonely, rocky shorelines of Gilneas. As the fog rolls in off the sea, she confronts eerie visitors: spectral buccaneers from the depths, whose unquiet spirits rise from the icy gray surf. Even those who know how very formidable the Princess can be fear for her safety during these nightly sojourns. These spirits seem less spectral and more solid with each passing night.
She may need to abandon her pet project soon, in any event. The hunters entering the Witchwood will have need of her skills.[7]

Trivia

  • According to Mike Donais, Blizzard discussed adding Tess' "Princess" title to her card name, but ultimately chose not to include it since "it isn't really how she identifies. Especially in this card".[8]
  • Tess' flavor text is a reference to the common phrase "those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it", usually attributed to George Santayana.
  • Tess' signature artwork was assigned to be a homage to the original artwork done by Jay Axer. Having left Blizzard in October 2022, Axer said that this would be "the last Hearthstone card I will ever do. Thanks for the ride."[9]
