Take a look at 2021 improvements, and see the future of Hearthstone Wiki in 2022

A new year is coming to Hearthstone, and so is the Hearthstone Wiki. In this blog, we want to take a look at what we did in 2021, and share plans for 2022 updates.

Updated images[edit source]

Different dimensions to use ( Bearon Gla'shear)

Almost all of our card images are updated to have the highest possible dimension, as well as changed the ratio of card image to clip.

To be exact, we used to have card image ratio of 286 x 395, the standard dimension of Hearthpwn and OutOfCards card images. Since Mercenaries was released and because of the new card type Ability, we decided to change the standard ratio to 33 x 41 so that some of important info in card image won't be clipped.

Since then, we also decided to use card images from other multiple sources, including Blizzard Game Press, PlayHearthstone Library, HearthSim's HearthstoneJSON project and Zero-To-Heroes so that our images are up to date with latest patch while having the highest possible dimension.

You may notice that in the card infobox, we do have links for each suitable for the dimension. 330 x 410px is the extended dimension of 286 x 395px (Hearthpwn/OutOfCards resolution). You can also check out these dimensions if you want to use along with images from other sources:

Finally, if not for all of these sites providing assets, we wouldn't really know how to manage to get the card images, so all credits to them!

Queries[edit source]

Wiki - query.jpg

Introducing queries, where you can search cards in the way you like!

In case you don't know, last year, we were trying to clean up our databases, as well as having imported new card data every time Hearthstone released a new patch. After over 10 months of cleaning, cards from our database will now be much easier to access. This opened opportunities for us to create ourshelves a tool that can search and return cards like PlayHearthstone Library, but with more customizations, more features, more attributes, and more sorting methods.

Unfortunately, we haven't been able to write for you a dedicated and detailed guide about how to use these queries yet, as well as testing properly to fix all the possible bugs or missing cards, but we can create existing queries for you!

Examples[edit source]

  • Let's check out an example, Battle Vicar! In this article's Notes section, you will see that we leave a link that redirects you to a list of collectible, Paladin, Holy, spell cards in Standard. We really hope that this should save you time from having to use our queries every time.
  • Guaranteed, all cards that have a Discover effect or generating card effect will contain this kind of link in our articles' Notes section. Don't forget to check them out!
  • If you find out card articles that do not have this kind of link yet, don't hesitate to call me: [Twitter link] [Discord channel] so that I can add them properly!
  • These links will be reviewed very carefully before adding, so that you don't need to doubt the accuracy of the query.

List of queries[edit source]

That's certainly not all, we will create more queries to access to more kind of databases from Hearthstone.

Full card art gallery[edit source]

Full card art is perhaps one of our most useful content that most of you are looking for. If we have to guess, you usually browse through our card articles and look at Gallery section to retrieve the full art of a card.

But... what if you want to retrieve multiple full arts at once?

  • At each card set article, we leave a button like this: Go to query.
  • When you click on it, you will be redirected to our query that lists a number of cards.
  • While you can have a list of card images, you can also change the display of the list by changing the Layout attribute, from Image to Gallery
  • Click Run query on the query page to see the results!

It's worth noting that a lot of cards are still missing full arts. But don't worry, we will try to provide them as soon as we find out what we are missing in the meantime.

In case you don't know, on the image articles, we do provide sources we retrieved the images, as well as stated the license properly. If you are a registered member of Fandom, you should be able to see them.

You can check out these examples:

Sounds[edit source]

  • Starting from Forged in the Barrens update, we are adding card sounds to our articles, including hero articles!
  • We are also renaming Quotes section to Sounds section, so that cards that have no quotes (Beasts, Dragons,...) will still be able to have their sounds uploaded to our articles.
  • Let's check out an example of  Drek'Thar: ▶️. This button, when clicked on, will play an audio file.
  • Special thanks to Firestone for helping us making this possible!!

Remaking main page[edit source]

Starting from Mercenaries release, we decided to separate our wiki into 3 smaller wikis, Constructed Wiki, Battlegrounds Wiki and Mercenaries Wiki. These are three main modes that have completely different gameplay to each other.

While Arena and Duels are also game modes, they have Constructed's basic gameplay (or as Blizzard calls, Traditional Hearthstone), so they will be merged with Constructed Wiki.

With this decision, we also remade our Main Page! As you can see, we tried to improve the overall look, supported the mobile view, provided more useful information while keeping things organized. We hope you like it!

Duels[edit source]

Duels recieved a huge overhaul!

  • Better view of list of cards
  • Updated card sets
  • Updated History section

Not only that, we will try to actively update the pool of treasures as soon as a new patch note is announced. As always, thank you so much for supporting our content and article!

Mercenaries[edit source]

Mercenaries was released in October 2021. We did actually have a rough start, since the data we were provided were released alongside with Mercenaries release, so it really took a lot of time until we are able to intialize a format for our articles about Mercenaries cards, as well as how we import card data from Hearthstone in the future.

Starting from Mercenaries release, you will notice that our main edits are going to be more automatic and not really involved in actual content/gameplay in order to catch up with frequent updates of Hearthstone.

2022 Plans[edit source]

Hearthstone Wiki never runs out things to improve. However, we want to tell you some important plans that we will be actively working on in 2022.

Remaking mechanics (keywords, effect types) articles[edit source]

With our new query technique, we are starting to improve articles that contain information about mechanics in Hearthstone, including keywords, one of the most common designs in Hearthstone. These kind of articles will:

  • State the latest patch that was checked
  • Provide videos that showcases some of the most niche or unusual interactions between mechanics!
  • Keep the article organized, informative, only list Standard format cards, but also have a button to redirect you to query to see more cards and change the format

You can check out the first article we just remade, Freeze.

Remaking artist articles[edit source]

With our new query technique, we are starting to improve artists articles! These articles will

  • Have a button to redirect you to query to see more cards
  • Add the external links to our database, so Artists can display them
  • List Mercenaries cards

You can check out the first article we just remade, Mooncolony, and artists whose names start with A (Alex Horley list is very big!).

Writing Mercenaries' metadata articles[edit source]

We are not finished with Mercenaries content. While we are able to provide you a list of mercenaries cards, tasks,... for information, we haven't been able to properly write some important articles as general definitions yet, like Mercenaries/Task, Bounty, and village buildings. We will try to do so as soon as possible.

Writing guide for Query usage & API[edit source]

As we're stated in #Queries, we will write a detailed guide about how to use our queries! Meanwhile, we also want to make them available earlier so that you can mess around and see what you can do.

On the other hand, we will also write a guide about how to use our public API, supported by Fandom. If you are a developer, you may want to take a look at our custom databases to retrieve the data for usage (They are free, as long as you use them only for Hearthstone content).

Others[edit source]

There are a lot of articles that will be rewritten or separated into smaller articles soon. While we don't have a list of articles to work now, we will be to decide after these top priorities are complete.

Conclusion[edit source]

That's all for our 2021 summary and the future of Hearthstone Wiki in 2022. As always, special thanks to all of you for supporting our content!
