Lore
Soul Fragments appear to be a fusion of Soul Shards, a unique secondary resource exclusive to warlocks, and actual Soul Fragments, which are used by demon hunters. Soul Shards are gathered by killing targets with certain spells, and must be consumed to cast other spells, much like how interacting minions destroy Soul Fragments to use their Battlecries. Soul Fragments are created when hitting or killing enemies with certain abilities, most notably Shattered Souls, which can be consumed to restore a portion of the demon hunter's health, much like their natural Casts When Drawn effect.
