- Like the other Secrets that trigger when your opponent plays a minion from their hand (Mirror Entity, Snipe, Repentance), Sacred Trial triggers in the After Play Phase following the Battlecry Phase. This means that all effects and death processing related to the minion's Battlecry resolve before the game queues and resolves Secrets such as Sacred Trial. For example, if you have one minion and play Dr. Boom, an enemy Sacred Trial will trigger.[1]
- Sacred Trial, Mirror Entity, Snipe, Repentance and Potion of Polymorph all trigger in order of play.
- Sacred Trial triggers if the minion is mortally wounded (such as by Snipe) or pending destroy (such as by Snipe + Acidmaw). This is probably a bug.[2]
- Repentance does not trigger if Sacred Trial sets the minion pending destroy before it.[3] (Before Patch 7.0, it would trigger even though the minion will die anyway.)[4]
- Snipe does not trigger if Sacred Trial sets the minion pending destroy before it.[5]
- Mirror Entity does not trigger if Sacred Trial sets the minion pending destroy before it.[6] (Before Patch 7.0, Mirror Entity would make a copy - that survives!)[7]
- Potion of Polymorph does not trigger if Sacred Trial sets the minion pending destroy before it.[8]
Lore
Sacred Trial represents "a hallway filled with holy lasers and swinging axes", which the worthy can stroll through unscathed, while the unworthy are destroyed.[9] It is original to Hearthstone.
Trivia
- This card is a reference to the trials at the end of the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. (See also: Harrison Jones.)
- Prior to Patch 9.2.0.21517 and while Lord Jaraxxus was a minion card, if you had Sacred Trial in play, and your opponent had 3 or more minions and plays Lord Jaraxxus, Sacred Trial triggered after the Battlecry finished and destroyed the Lord Jaraxxus hero, ending the game.[10][11]
