Into the Emerald Dream
Into the Emerald Dream is Hearthstone's 29th expansion, featuring 145 new collectible cards released on March 25, 2025.[1][2] This expansion explores the Emerald Dream, as the battle between the Old Gods and the Druids of the Emerald Dream decides the fate of the World Tree.
Into the Emerald Dream introduces two new keywords: Dark Gift and Imbue. Dark Gifts are additional bonus effects added to minions chosen from Discover effects. Cards that Imbue replace the player's hero power with a new one, and subsequent Imbues upgrade that hero power.

Lore[edit | edit source]

The Emerald Dream[edit | edit source]

- The Emerald Dream (also known as the Emerald Dreaming, the Dream of Creation, the land of dreams, or simply the Dream or Dreaming) is a vast, ever-changing spirit world that exists outside the boundaries of the physical world and is the verdant realm of the Dragon Aspect Merithra of the green dragonflight. The Emerald Dream represents how Azeroth would have been if intelligent beings had not altered its surface, or what the world might some day be again. However, some suggest that the Dream is not only bound to Azeroth but also to realms not yet discovered, such as the Realms of Life.
- The Emerald Dream apparently has some kind of ancient link with the realm of Ardenweald, where souls close to nature, such as Ysera herself, rest in the Shadowlands. Both planes are essentially opposite blooms connected to the same tree, with the former personalizing Life in its waxing stages, and the latter embodying Life in its wane. Where the Dream represents the spring and summer of the cycle of life, Ardenweald reflects autumn and winter, in essence, being the highest expression of the relationship between endings and beginnings - between Death and Life.
- In this world of untamed nature, druids gain insight and oneness with the Great Cycle, and everything about them is rooted in cycles and transience, and the Emerald Dream itself.

The Emerald Nightmare[edit | edit source]

- The Emerald Nightmare (or the Nightmare for short) is the name given to the Old God corruption of the Emerald Dream. When the Nightmare spreads, it consumes the life force of all it touches. The more it spreads, the weaker druid magic becomes. It is a realm of death, decay, and nightmare.
- During the War Against the Nightmare, it was revealed that the Emerald Nightmare was under the rule of a figure known as the Nightmare Lord, who in fact was really Malfurion Stormrage's old nemesis Xavius. However, it was also revealed that Xavius himself was a minion of a powerful yet ancient evil, residing in the Rift of Aln, and possibly also beneath Azeroth's oceans. Despite the defeat of Xavius and the removal of much of the nightmare through the course of Stormrage, the noting of a still-corrupted area indicates that the Nightmare is still a threat. Its influence is slowly overtaking the forests of Val'sharah through the World Tree Shaladrassil during the events of Legion.
- The Nightmare acts like a heavy shroud, warping reality, altering the perception of all living things, and bending the boundary between reality and dream. None are immune to the Nightmare's corruption, and it has been known to take hold of former Dragon Aspects, demigods and even demons. When a mortal has become corrupted by the nightmare, there is no return. Only death will set them free, although Elune's power in Tyrande Whisperwind's presence has seemingly cleansed or resisted its corruption to varying degrees on several occasions, such as with Eranikus, Elothir and Ysera. Once cursed, the nightmare will begin consuming the victim's thoughts and filling their head with the voices of other corrupted beings, even the nearby flora. The curse itself, however, is known to make the victims very, very powerful, rivaling even that of ancients.
