CATACLYSM
- For the card of the same name, see
Cataclysm.
CATACLYSM is Hearthstone's 32nd expansion, featuring 135 new collectible cards released on March 17, 2026.[1] This expansion continues the story of Across the Timeways, where Murozond refused to accept the defeat from Chromie, smashing the Hourglass of Time and opening a portal to a nightmare timeline where
Deathwing never fell.
CATACLYSM introduces two new keywords: Herald and Shatter. Shatter splits a card into two, adding both halves to the opposite sides of the player's hand and recombining into a powerful card once they meet again in hand.
Herald is tied to a returning keyword, Colossal. Herald is similar to Invoke, where it upgrades the Deathwing, Worldbreaker hero card. Additionally, it upgrades the appendages of the player's Colossal minion while also summoning a Soldier bearing the effect of the appendage.

Multi-class[edit | edit source]
This expansion features multi-class cards for Deathwing-allied classes. These cards can be played in Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior.
Themes[edit | edit source]
Become the Worldbreaker: New Deathwing Hero Card[edit | edit source]
- Play Deathwing, Worldbreaker to become Deathwing himself! Your destructive Battlecry lets you pick the Cataclysm you want to unleash: topple the biggest enemy minion, raze the board with a wave of flame, enthrall minions to join your army, or summon your fearsome dragon progeny to the battlefield.
- But why settle for just one? The more you use the new Herald keyword, the more Cataclysms you can fire off when you transform into Deathwing!
Colossals Are Back and Stronger Than Ever with Herald[edit | edit source]
- Colossals are BIG! First introduced to Hearthstone in Voyage to the Sunken City, they represent creatures of massive scale, making them perfect for Deathwing’s Lieutenants like Ragnaros and Azshara. When you play a Colossal minion, they expand and take up multiple spaces on the board with appendage cards that act as their huge arms, extra heads, gross tentacles, etc. These appendages have abilities that complement the main Colossal minion, creating a unified display of their enormous power.
- All classes are getting a brand new Legendary Colossal card in CATACLYSM. The new Herald keyword is tied to Deathwing’s arrival, so only the six classes aligned with him reap its benefits: Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior.
Arisen Onyxia
Azshara, Ocean Lord
Wickerfang
Magmaw
Vulcanos
Chromatus
The Black Blood
Sinestra
Al'Akir, Lord of Storms
Cho'gall, Mastermind
Ragnaros, the Great Fire
- But these aren’t the same Colossals as before. To turn the heat up for CATACLYSM, cards like Envoy of the End use Herald to make them even more effective.
- Deathwing’s servants herald the coming of the Worldbreaker and his Colossal cronies, and the Herald keyword showcases that in two key ways. First, when you play a minion with Herald, a Soldier of your class’s Colossal is summoned to the battlefield. These Soldiers share the same effects as that Colossal’s appendages. Since Colossal minions typically arrive later in the game due to their high mana cost, Soldiers let you tap into those abilities earlier. A preview of the destruction your Colossal will unleash.
- But that’s not all! The more you use Herald, the mightier Deathwing and your Colossal Soldiers and appendages become. Herald twice to double their power. Herald two more times to double it again.

Defend with the Dragonflights[edit | edit source]
- The dragonflights were vital in taking down the original Deathwing, and we’re calling on them once again! Mage, Priest, Druid, Hunter, and Paladin are aligned with the dragonflights, and each class receives a Legendary Dragon Aspect card.
New Keyword: Shatter[edit | edit source]
- Deathwing’s destruction is spreading across Azeroth, and our heroes are doing their best to pick up the pieces. Enter Shatter, a new keyword for the dragonflight-aligned classes. When you draw a card with Shatter, it breaks into two pieces that move to opposite ends of your hand. You can play the pieces separately, but if you manage to bring them back together by playing the cards in between, they recombine into a single card that’s doubly strong.
Play with Precision Using New Hand-Targeting Cards[edit | edit source]
- You can now target specific cards in your hand with new cards like Battlefield Blaster and Chamber of Aspects.
- Expect to see more hand targeting cards in this and future expansions.

Lore[edit | edit source]
CATACLYSM takes inspiration from the World of Warcraft expansion of the same name. It is also the name of a great event that happened in Azeroth.
- The Cataclysm (also called the Great Cataclysm, the great upheaval, or the Shattering) was a chain reaction of natural disasters that struck Azeroth in 28 ADP following
Deathwing blasting his way from Deepholm into the world, breaking down the boundaries between the Elemental Plane and the physical world. The damage caused to the World Pillar caused the Elemental Plane to collide with the physical realm, resulting in drastic geographical upheaval, causing chaotic elementals to pour out into the world of Azeroth. Earthquakes, volcano eruptions, and floods followed in Deathwing's wake, killing thousands and reshaping the face of the world.
- It is also the era in which the stories of Cataclysm took place and ended with the demise of Deathwing.
- When Deathwing shattered the World Pillar, it was fragmented into three pieces, the upper, the middle, and the lower. If the World Pillar had not been restored, Deepholm would have collapsed into Azeroth. After its shattering, the mortal races struggled merely to survive the earthquakes, tidal waves, and devastating flames that consumed many of their cities and homelands.
- The Cataclysm brought the Elemental Plane closer to Azeroth and in direct conflict with the Elemental Lords — including Ragnaros, who, upon his return, assaulted Nordrassil, prompting
Malfurion Stormrage to organize a defense of Mount Hyjal again.
- The coastlines of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms shifted, flooding some old lands and exposing new ones. Whole parts of the world, like Thousand Needles and a large chunk of Tanaris, ended up underwater. In some cases, tidal waves caused by the Cataclysm flooded or destroyed coastal settlements like Auberdine, Rut'theran Village, and Feathermoon Stronghold, forcing their residents to relocate — usually inland. Even far from the coast, fires, avalanches, and lava eruptions changed some areas beyond recognition. The Barrens was split into two.
- The tectonic shifts blocked some old routes, like the one between Badlands and Loch Modan, and opened some new ones through previously impassable mountains. The Cataclysm also damaged an ancient titan device previously hiding the Uldum complex, exposing access to it from Tanaris. Zandalar was thought to have been severely crippled. Though this later proved to be an incorrect claim based on an inaccurate vision by Zul. It did, however, cause the region of Nazmir to lose elevation and become a swamp, and also destroyed the second seal holding the prison of G'huun.
- Far out in the ocean, the Wandering Isle experienced what Chen Stormstout described as horrible waves.
- The goblin island of Kezan, and the self-isolated nation of Gilneas in the peninsula of the same name, suffered greatly from natural disasters, leading directly to events that affected the existing balance between the Horde and the Alliance respectively, redrawing the political map of the world. Mount Kajaro on Kezan erupted, forcing an evacuation by the goblins. Earthquakes damaged the Greymane Wall that had protected Gilneas by land and a coral reef that protected them by sea, opening them up to invasion by the Forsaken and the rest of the Horde. Large chunks of of the lands near the sea also ended up underwater in a manner of seconds.
- The Cataclysm not only changed the land but also the sea, rendering old weather, tide, and navigation notes useless. The mists around Pandaria parted because of the Cataclysm. The Dragon Isles, magically hidden by the Beacon of Tyrhold, were on the other hand unaffected.
- During his last battle, Deathwing tried to summon the "final Cataclysm". After the Aspect's death, Thrall concluded that the Cataclysm was over.
